Walnut trees are any species of tree in the plant genus Juglans, the type genus of the family Juglandaceae. Walnuts are the seeds of the walnut tree – usually harvested from cultivated varieties of the species Juglans regia.
Of the 21 species the two most commercially important species are Juglans regia (common walnut) for timber and nuts, and Juglans nigra (eastern American black walnut) for timber. Both species have similar cultivation requirements and are widely grown in temperate zones. Although some cultivars are somewhat “self fertile” when grown for nuts, they will generally fruit better with a different pollination partner.
Working with walnut wood may mildly stain your skin where there is prolonged or repeated contact. Remember to wear proper protective equipment when woodworking.
